Obituary for Sylvia Graham

Sylvia Beatrice Birch Graham

Beloved wife of the late Kenneth Graham, devoted mother of Pamela (Derek), Celia (late John) and Andrea, cherished grandmother of Jordana (Marc), Danika (Justin), Neil and Kaelan, and great grandmother to Lenna and Keira, Sylvia Beatrice Birch Graham left us on Saturday May 11, 2024. Born in England in 1927, Sylvia’s first post-WWII work was in a weather office in Poole. She met Ken, a charming British Major, in London, and they sailed across the Atlantic to start their married life in Canada in 1949.

While Sylvia retained much of her Britishness, she learned to ski and enjoy the Canadian outdoors. She was a school secretary and usually chose to ride her bike or walk rather than drive to work. An observant and independent thinker, she was so often, much to her children’s chagrin, nearly always right. Sylvia’s powerful memory and wide interests meant she could readily be consulted on matters from climatology to health to culture or history. Her homemaking provided a bedrock for her family, and she raised her children with fresh air, superb nutrition, and enriching activities. She pursued her love of swimming and bridge into her retirement.

Sylvia will be missed dearly but her care and guidance is indelible and her love lives on. Friends may call at the Marshall Funeral Home, 10366 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill on Thursday May 16, 2024, 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. followed by a service in the chapel at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial donation to Osteoporosis Canada or a charity of your choice.
