Obituary for Roy Smith

Roy William Smith, devoted and loving husband of Donna McCord, of Richmond Hill, Ontario, passed away Friday, July 28, 2023, at age 85 years.

He was born in Bathurst, New Brunswick to the late William Smith and Greta Hodnett of New Bandon, New Brunswick.

With his wife, Roy is survived by his sister Hazel (late, Alexander “Al” Harvey) of Peterborough and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his sisters: Ella (late, Lyman Knowles), Edith (late, Rev Eldon Jagoe), Ruth (late, Rupert Scott), Marguerite (late Walter Morrison), Ruby (late, Rev Stewart Lewis), Marjory “Molly” (late, Alvin Burmaster) and brothers: Aubrey (Wilma Hubbard Smith) and Walter (Joyce Gregersen, late, Opal Ward), and several nieces and nephews.

After Bathurst High School, Roy joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, and later as a constable with the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force. He worked as a technician with National Cash Register, and after receiving his pilot licence he joined Buttonville Municipal Airport where he worked as traffic pilot and did aerial survey for Northern Pipeline. He was an engineering pilot with Rogers Cable, Toronto.

Wherever Roy went there was music. He loved playing his guitar and singing, especially joining groups at Live Oak and Spanish Lakes, Florida, and Tuesday nights with the Acadian Fiddlers and Roger Lanteigne in Bathurst. And there was always pork spare ribs at the Bonne Route, or salt cod at Resto Chez Isa or Restaurant La Crêpe Bretonne with friends and family.

After their retirement Roy and his wife spent winters at Mobile Estates, Sarasota, Florida and summers at their summer home in New Bandon.

Thanks to the wonderfully caring and supportive staff at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital and Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, and the many relatives and friends who prayed for us during this most difficult time.

There is no visitation at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at a later date in New Bandon. Arrangements are in the care of Marshall Funeral Home (www.marshallfuneralhome.com) Richmond Hill, Ontario and Elhatton’s Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst, New Brunswick.

Memorial gifts may given to a charity of your choosing.
