Obituary for Olive Mae Cox

COX, Olive Mae (nee: Bell) 1931-2021 peacefully at Hill House Hospice Richmond Hill, Monday May 10th, after a brief illness. Predeceased by sisters Thora (Coleman) and Shirley (Johnston) and brothers Bill and Ken. Cherished wife of 63 years of Meryl. Loving mother to Andrew (Terri-Ann Witwicki)and Jennifer (Ian Gallichan). Treasured grandmother of Rowan, Gavin, Dalton and Fiona. Olive was born and raised on a farm in Leeds County Ontario. She was the first in her family to graduate University from Queens in 1958. To be able to afford University she began teaching right out of high school and completed her University in the summer terms. She was teaching at the age of 18 years in a one room schoolhouse near her home in Mott’s Mills Ontario. A teaching job took her to Sundridge, Ontario where she met Meryl. They were married and shortly thereafter moved to Richmond Hill where they have lived and raised a family. In Richmond Hill she taught at McConaghy Public School in the basement with the other new teachers. After taking some time off to raise her children when they were small she resumed teaching again and started with long term supply teacher assignments at Jefferson Public School, Roselawn Public School, 16th Avenue Public School amongst others. OIive reached mandatory retirement age (65) and retired from her full-time permanent teaching position at Crosby Heights Public School. She was a devoted Christian who contributed greatly to Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church and before that Wesley United Church in Vandorf. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family including her grandchildren. She loved attending annual family reunions and visiting with everyone. Marshall’s Funeral Home in Richmond Hill is handling arrangements. Funeral service will be immediate family only due to COVID restrictions. The service of remembrance will be recorded and available for viewing at www.olivecox.ca as of 2 P.M. Saturday May 15th, 2021. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Hill House Hospital and MacKenzie Health Richmond Hill as well as all the friends and family who have cared for Mom and the family through this difficult time.
