Obituary for Luigi Nicolo Parmegiani

Dr. Luigi Parmegiani, DVM passed away at the age of 85 years in his home in Richmond Hill on January 31, 2021 after a short and physically devastating fight with cancer. He faced the reality of his final days with a depth of courage, and peace that is unfathomable. Luigi was born on January 1, 1936 in Sassari Sardegna, Italy to Marco and Serafina Parmegiani. He was the first of three of three siblings followed by Giulia and Nicolo. Sardegna is where his life- long passion for the outdoors, and particularly hunting, fishing and gardening took hold. Luigi earned a degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Sassari in 1962 and again upon coming to Canada succeeded in passing his exams from the University of Guelph to qualify as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

He came to Canada in November 1964 after marrying Marina Francisi and the birth of his son Marco in Italy. His wife and child soon followed to start their lives in Canada, where his second child Olwen was born. He opened his Veterinary practise, Ripley Animal Hospital, in Richmond Hill in 1967 and was active until his retirement in 2017 at the age of 81 years.

Luigi was a true Canadian. He came to Canada with hope and passion and built a life for himself and his family. His dreams were fulfilled, and his aspirations were satisfied. Luigi came from a long line of Parmegiani’s dating back to the mid 1500’s and notwithstanding this long and rich history he fully embraced his life in Canada. He was an avid and accomplished fisherman with Georgian Bay and Lake Simcoe being where he cast his line both in summer and winter. He equally enjoyed hunting for both game and mushrooms and spent countless hours walking with his dogs in the forests, fields and Canadian Shield in and around his properties or in a duck blind on a secluded bay or marsh. He was in perfect harmony with himself and the wildness and content in tranquil solitude. His rural upbringing spawned his passion for gardening. He kept a greenhouse where he began sowing seeds in pots in mid winter to be followed by planting the young flowers and vegetables in his garden in the Spring.

He left an indelible mark on his family, his friends and his community. His family: Marina, Marco, Olwen and grandchildren, Caterina, Sean, Rachel, Colleen and Sabina are his proudest legacy.
