Obituary for John Allan Smith

John Allan Smith

John Allan Smith, “Jack” or “Uncle Jack” to his nieces and nephews, passed away peacefully in his sleep May 27, 2023, in Newmarket, ON, in his 95th year. He was born in Toronto on April 20, 1929.

Son of the late John Dudley and Jessie Lees Smith, Jack is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Dorothy, their sons Ted (Cathy), David (Joanne) and Richard (Stacey) grandchildren Courtney, Danielle, Carly, Jack and Samantha, and brother Bruce. Predeceased by sisters Jean Butler, Eileen Gradeen, and brother Doug.

Jack joined his father J.D. Smith in the cartage and warehousing business out of high school, later joined by his brother Doug. Over the next 42 years, Jack helped build a lasting foundation for J.D. Smith & Sons Limited, and was present in 2019 for the company’s 100th anniversary celebrations.

Jack led a remarkable and full life, enriched by an incredible circle of family and friends. This included many summers he and Dorothy spent entertaining at the family cottage on North Bay, Honey Harbour, in the Smith family since 1924, and many memorable winter trips to the Caribbean, Florida, and Hilton Head, S.C. Jack was just about the last remaining of that once very large circle.

Right up until the end, Dad was putting his concern for others before himself, not wanting to be a burden. As he had always lived his life, even at the end, he was still quietly leading by example.

To my husband, to our Dad, and to our Grandpa, we would just say: Rest easy now, your work is done, your legacy is assured, and you will remain with us in our hearts, always.

Love, Dorothy, Ted & Cathy, Courtney, Danielle, & Carly, Dave & Joanne, Rich & Stacey, Samantha & Jack.

An announcement on the details of a Celebration Of Life will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Alzheimer Society (support. alzheimer.ca) in Jack’s name .
