Obituary for Johanna Mary Bailey

Johanna Mary Bailey (nee Ryan) died peacefully in hospital in Lindsay, Ontario on May 14th, 2023 at the age of 81.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Victor and children Jason, Mary Ellen (Andrew) and Tracy and grand-children Alexandra and Ben. Pre-deceased by her beloved son Linus.

Johanna was born in 1941, the youngest sister of Margie, Noreen and Eileen. She was born and raised in New York City, a place for which she had fond memories throughout her life. Johanna met and married Victor in New York while he was attending Columbia University and, in 1965, they moved to Toronto. Despite the distance, fun summers were shared with an extensive collection of devoted sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins in New York with long road trips planned to ensure the family could be together. Victor and Johanna loved going to the theatre together and continued to watch old movies together throughout their marriage – laughing at the same things.

Johanna enjoyed the company of family and friends. She welcomed everyone into her home. She loved to laugh and have fun. Her peaceful calm, yet witty and fun presence was a comfort to us all. Generous to a fault, Johanna gave freely and focussed on the needs of others more than her own. She loved to garden, enjoy a sweet treat and to explore the weekend garage sales. Johanna found the fun in everything she did. Johanna was wonderfully devoid of enemies and couldn’t find a disparaging word for anyone. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and wife. She was our rock, our comfort, and our peace. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have met her.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 17th from 6-8 p.m. at MARSHALL FUNERAL HOME, 10366 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill, ON. Prayer service will be held in the chapel on Thursday, May 18th at 2 p.m. with visitation 1 hour prior.
