Obituary for Eugenia Derziotis

Eugenia Derziotis passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday December 13, 2022, surrounded by her family, three months shy of her ninety-ninth birthday.
Born March 6, 1924 in a small village, Bellies, she was predeceased by her husband John, 3 children and 5 siblings. Loving mother to Tina, Katherine, Anna, Stella and Demetra, and proud grandmother of 13 grand children and 10 great grand children.
Fondly known as “Yiayia” to all, she loved gardening, sewing, cooking, and enjoying a hot cup of coffee with friends and family. Faith and religion played a key role in guiding her throughout her journeys. With only a grade 5 education (due to financial restraints while she was growing up), she was overjoyed with pride when she became a Canadian Citizen. She was truly grateful especially to her brother George and his wife Angela for sponsoring her in 1960 and aiding in her return to Canada in the summer of 1976 with her two youngest daughters. Her very matter of fact approach paved the way to a “can do” attitude that made her fiercely independent even to the bitter end when her mind and body failed her.
Our family would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people, for their kindness and help with our mother’s journey especially when it was difficult.
Visitation will be held at MARSHALL FUNERAL HOME, 10366 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill, on Thursday December 15th from 4-7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Panteleimon Greek Orthodox Church 11323 Warden Avenue, Markham on Friday December 16th at 10:30 a.m. Interment Pine Hills Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society in her honour.
