Obituary for Elizabeth Groves

Elizabeth died peacefully at the age of 93. She was predeceased by her loving husband of over 30 years, Kenneth Groves (2009), whom she missed dearly. Sister of Robert Flood (Carol) and Linda Hutchison. Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents Jack and Elizabeth Flood and siblings John Flood, Leonard Flood, Mary Burns, Fred Flood and Joan Price. She will be remembered by her many nieces, nephews and long-time friends.
Raised on the Flood farm in Jefferson, Ontario (now Richmond Hill), Elizabeth was adventurous and determined, with a wry sense of humour. A proud alumnus of the University of Toronto, Elizabeth graduated as a Physical and Occupational Therapist in 1953. She stayed closely connected to her classmates throughout the years. Her career in healthcare began at Queen Mary Veterans Hospital in Montréal alongside her sister Mary. This was followed by time at the Orangeville Hospital and York Central Hospital, where she met her husband Kenneth. Together in retirement they owned and operated Toll Road Antiques on Yonge Street, inviting many a passerby into their home or barn to shop and perhaps stay for a cup of tea or ramble through the gardens.
Elizabeth loved to travel and be outdoors on the ski slopes, the golf course or in her expansive gardens. She was also a master of the decorative arts, gifting her projects to family, friends and charity.
Always strong in her personal convictions and generous to those in need, Elizabeth was recognized for her volunteerism with the Canadian Outstanding Volunteer Achievement Award in 2013. She was an active member of the Anglican Church of Canada, serving in various ministries at St. John’s Anglican Jefferson over the course of her life. She also devoted many years of volunteer service to the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society.
The family would like to express thanks to the kind and caring staff of 1North at Markhaven Home for Seniors; especially Pamela Willems who was Liz’s special companion these past three years.
Visitation will be held at Marshall Funeral Home, 10366 Yonge St, Richmond Hill on Friday April 28, 2023 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Internment at St. John’s Anglican Church Jefferson Cemetery will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Scott Mission.
