Cathy Merritt Smith
(Nee Schneider)
Cathy left us quietly on January 24, after a mercifully short battle with cancer. She leaves Mark, her husband of 38 years, broken hearted. Cathy’s world revolved around her three boys; Daniel (Diane), Stephen (Jake) and Andrew (Lindsey). She was thriving in the recent role of Nana to her grandson Jackson. She also leaves behind her father Fred Schneider and a legion of friends.
A few words cannot capture a beautiful soul like Cathy. She was warm, welcoming, kind and truly caring with a wonderful sense of fun. She was truly interested in the lives of everyone she met and could put people at ease in a way that made them want to share their story. Cathy will be remembered for her butter tarts, her sense of humour, holiday dinners for the family and extended family, her thoughtfulness, the salt and pepper collection, ice cream, Black Magic chocolates, her playfulness, her compassion; the list seems endless. But more than anything else whoever met Cathy remembers her laugh; full throated, genuine and often uncontrollable, her laughter pulled everyone along with it. That laugh and the lovely woman that owned it will be missed more than anyone can say.
Thanks to kind staff at Sunnybrook, especially the wonderful Dr. Sarah Torabi who made many difficult days a little easier.
Due to Covid restrictions a private memorial by invitation will be held.
In lieu of flowers Cathy wanted everyone to make a special effort to have a fun day with their kids, grandkids, significant others, friends, family – anyone they care about – and pause for a moment that day to remember her.
